Diffusers or Candles?

Author: Karyn Brooke

One of the best things about being in a flower shop every day is the different floral fragrances filling the design room. Each and every flower has its own distinctive scent. Every time I pick up a stem of stock, bring it to my nose, close my eyes, I breathe it in deeply and relive every moment that involves cloves from studding oranges at Thanksgiving to baking pies with my mom. I’m surrounded all day by the best scent nature has to offer, so it’s no surprise to me why my home is filled with candles and diffusers.
I love candles. I really love candles….but I find that only burn them when I know someone is coming. I live in a house with a man’s man and two big dogs so diffusers are my aromatherapy. There are so many different types of diffusers available that I think you have to choose what you like in a diffuser. My preference is a reed a diffuser. A good reed diffuser. I say that because a good reed diffuser lasts way longer than an inexpensive one.
I flip my reeds weekly when I water plants. That’s how I remember. The reeds wick up the oil so take some care when you flip them. Make sure you don’t drip any of the oil on your furniture (and if you do wipe it up immediately) then wipe the bottle and wash your hands. If I place one on wood, I always try to put it on a tray, a piece of glass, small mirror anything to make sure it doesn’t leave a mark on my furniture. They work best in smaller areas such as bathrooms, hallways, entry, night stands, etc. You can mix up your scents or make a huge impact by using all one scent.
Two years ago I had the opportunity to accessorize a client’s lake house and I placed 8 diffusers throughout their 5 bedroom 5 bath ranch style house. Just a month ago I refilled all of them for the first time…..(yes the first time…..remember “good” diffuser) Every time I walk through the door of their house you can hear me say out loud “damn it smells good in here!”
We currently carry three brands of “good” diffusers. Simpatico, Hillhouse and Votivo and the average price is around $45.00 per bottle. Simpatico White Flower is hands down our best seller! I wonder if that’s because I tell everyone the lake house story and finish it with the Simpatico White flower diffuser sample. Those sweet hobnail glass bottles found a permanent placement in a vacation home working double duty to keep damp musty smells at bay!
