Governor’s Island: New York Wedding Love without Labels

Author: Karyn Brooke

I never know what to say. If I say gay wedding I’m supposed say same sex wedding and if I say same sex wedding I’m supposed to say gay wedding. I don’t want to say anything other than I had the honor of doing wedding flowers in New York on Governor’s Island for two incredible women named Taylor and Dasha.
This was in fact, the first public wedding on Governor’s Island. The 172 acre island is rich in American history. It was declared a National Monument in 2001 and is owned and managed by National Park Service. In 1988, President Ronald Regan had his final meeting with Mikhail Gorbachev in that very place. Dasha is from Russia and her grandfather traveled from Russia to be at her wedding. His loving toast was translated by one of the bridesmaids and as I imagined what it could have been like in this very room 29 years ago I had goosebumps.
The renovation for this former Admirals Home is ongoing but no one even noticed. No one complained about the slight cold drizzle that kept us under umbrellas during the ceremony. It was a blessing for me. The flowers loved it! The arrangements spent the night on the front porch until I could catch the ferry the next morning and put them in their prominent places. All any of us noticed was the glowing love of these two women surrounded by family and friends who had no reservations about being there and embraced their choice.
How did a florist from Kansas City end up in New York arranging flowers? Taylor was born in Kansas City and moved to New York. Her mother is one of my besties and that beautiful woman aka “The Duchess of Divine Beauty” took the Sidelines team along for the floral ride of our lives doing designs for corporate events coast to coast. Somewhere along the way we initiated ourselves into our own YaYa Sisterhood. I am “The Countess of All Things Beautiful.” Taylor said no flowers for parents or grandparents but look close, I had to make her mother a floral ring!

One of the best things about being in a flower shop every day is the different floral fragrances filling the design room.  Each and every flower has its own distinctive scent.  Every time I pick up a stem of stock, bring it to my nose, close my eyes, I breathe it in deeply and relive every moment that involves cloves from studding oranges at Thanksgiving to baking pies with my mom.
